Though you do not need a certain qualification to fit heat pumps, we strongly recommend attending our free of charge product training before carrying out an installation.
Our Monobloc Air to Water course and Hybrid course allows you to have hands-on experience with the appliance, understand all the features and benefits, specification, installation and servicing.
How can I offer MCS?
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an industry-led scheme which demonstrates the quality and reliability of approved products and installation companies.
Being MCS certified demonstrates to your customers that you install to the industry-expected level of quality every time. MCS provides assurance and access to Government funding.
Start your MCS journey with us
To become a MCS heat pump installer or designer you will need to attend certain industry courses. Candidates will need to have at least one of the following qualifications:
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or similar earlier certification that shows competence.
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or similar earlier certification that shows competence.
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or similar earlier certification that shows competence.
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or similar earlier certification that shows competence.
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or similar earlier certification that shows competence.
- Heating installers with minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating system, shown either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe register, OFTEC, MCS, HETAS registration.

Training courses required to become MCS registered
Water regulations certificate (WRAS) course
This course covers Water Regulations [1999] and is a necessary requirement for qualified plumbers to join their local water authorities water industry approved plumber scheme.

Level 3 Award Low temperature heating and hot water systems in dwellings
This course will cover the design of low temperature heating systems including heat loss, heat emitters, pipe and pump sizing as well as domestic hot water storage.
For those looking to achieve MCS certification for Heat Pump Design and Installation, both the ‘Low Temperature Heating & Hot Water Systems in Dwellings’ qualification and the ‘Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems’ (Non-refrigerant circuits) qualification will need to be completed.
For those looking to achieve MCS certification for Heat Pump Design only, completing the ‘Low Temperature Heating and How Water Systems’ qualification will go towards meeting the requirements of MIS3005-D.
Applicants are advised to contact their MCS Certification Body for details of what is necessary to meet the remaining MIS3005-D requirements.

Level 3 Award RQF installation and maintenance of air source heat pump systems
In this course you will gain knowledge and understanding of air to water heat pump technologies, installation, commissioning, customer handover, service and maintenance, fault finding and repair.
This qualification would enable registration with MCS for work under the scope of MIS 3005-I (The Heat Pump Standard - Installation).
You must also hold a Water Regulations Certificate to attend this course.
