To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Nathan and Stephen, apprentice's at N A Guppy Ltd, to get their take on renewables and what they think the future holds for heating. We visited a new-build site where they were getting hands-on with installing heat pumps at every property. For one of them, it was their first time fitting heat pumps! We know what it's like starting out in the industry, so it's refreshing seeing apprentice's learning about renewables so early on in their journey.
When talking to them, they discussed the growing role of renewable energy, especially as demand for electrified solutions increases. They highlighted the experience they’re getting with new systems like heat pumps and how it’s shaping their skills for the future. It’s clear that they’re gaining valuable knowledge that could be key to the ongoing shift towards electrified heating solutions.

Hear from Nathan & Stephen:
When asked how they’ve found diversifying into renewables they said: “It’s been good! We’ve fitted around 13 heat pumps on this site now, so I’ve learned a lot, it’s been a perfect learning curve for me.”
It was great to hear how surprised they were about the noise levels of our heat pumps: “We said to each other we didn’t even know they were on when we turned them on because of how quiet they are!”.
We asked them what they think about the industry heading towards electrification:
“I think for the planet we do need to push for air source heat pumps in terms of how we provide heat for houses just because of the emissions with gas. At the moment customers are worrying about the price of heat pumps, but I think the way they run in low temperatures, you’ve got to trust it, trust how they’re being built.”
