Or are you looking for an alternative to the more common gas boiler? Whatever your needs and wherever you are, a new oil boiler could be the perfect solution to keeping you and your home warm.

Living in one of the UK’s four million off grid homes?

Or are you looking for an alternative to the more common gas boiler? Whatever your needs and wherever you are, a new oil boiler could be the perfect solution to keeping you and your home warm.

With no need to be connected to the national grid, oil boilers give you the freedom and flexibility to buy fuel as and when you need it – or even stock up when prices are low.

But the way that oil boilers are installed is a little different, if you’re used to the traditional gas version. Knowing the ins and outs will help you choose the right installer and installation.

Getting an oil boiler installed

Whilst you probably won’t notice the day-to-day differences between an oil and a gas boiler, they are very different when it comes to installation. This is mainly because an oil boiler will draw its fuel from a tank, which is normally in your garden, rather than pipes connected to the mains.

Most installations can be completed within a day, including the fuel tank, and you can expect to benefit from similar levels of efficiency as you would a modern gas boiler. As one of the cheaper alternative heating fuels (like LPG or electricity), you also won’t be breaking the bank for the privilege.

How much does an oil boiler installation cost?

The boiler itself can range from £1,000 to £5,000, with the price based mostly on brand and type, but also its size and how much heating and hot water you need.

When it comes to installation, expect to pay between £1,000 and £3,000. It’ll be cheaper if you already have an oil boiler and you’re simply replacing it, or more expensive if you’re switching systems and there’s work to do (like installing a fuel tank for the first time).

The good news is that you’ll find your monthly bills to be cheaper than if you were using LPG or electric, and you can also get financial assistance with the overall costs – from grants like the Energy Company Obligation and the Boiler Replacement Scheme.

Are oil boilers being banned?

In short – no.

This rumour comes from the fact that, from 2025, all new build homes will come with low carbon heating solutions. That means no more gas and boilers in brand new homes, but it doesn’t affect existing homes. If you buy and install an oil boiler, you’ll be allowed to use it for the entirety of its life.

Which oil boiler do I need?

Getting a new oil boiler installed means choosing the right one. This mainly comes down to two factors – how busy your home is (and therefore how much heating and hot water is required), and what boiler you’ve got right now. Owners of big houses with multiple bathrooms will want a very different boiler setup to somebody living on their own in a flat.

Oil combi boilers

Oil combi boilers are an easy, simple, and straightforward system for smaller homes with just one bathroom. They don’t require water tanks and they’ll give you hot water on demand – heated up directly in the boiler.

System oil boilers

System oil boilers are better for medium-sized properties, as they will heat and store water in a tank. If you’ve got some spare space (in a loft perhaps) then system oil boilers will give you more hot water at the same time.

Regular oil boilers

Regular oil boilers were the most popular boiler choice for years, and are normally found in larger, older properties. That doesn’t mean they’re no good though – their double water tank setup means they can cope with the biggest and busiest of households.
